Should I clean past the butterfly valve in the throttle body?
When I clean my throttle body, should I clean past the butterfly valve? and if I should, then how? Because my hand won't reach all the way past the butterfly valve.
Well if you are cleaning the throttle body it must be gunked up or else you wouldn't be doing it. Carbon builds up on the throttle body before AND after the butterfly valve. Using a toothbrush and throttle body cleaner is a good remedy for the shade tree mechanic, it will get most of the carbon off. The proper way to clean the throttle body is to remove it from the engine and remove ALL of the sensors before cleaning. Then you can soak it in parts cleaner so that all of the tiny air passageways in the valve get cleaned. Clean the sensors with an electronic cleaner as to not damage them. Replace everything using a new throttle body gasket and away you go. Obviously there is some technical skill required to do this, so if you are not comfortable then like I said at the beginning, toothbrush and throttle body cleaner and try to get as much as possible. TIP: Have it serviced by a mechanic every 100,000km so they can do a through clean if you can't.
