How many times can the human body be put through exhaustion in one day?
I run a fitness school for children and adults where I commonly get a lot of complains when the going gets tough (mainly the adults).
My question is quite specific and may be aimed towards those in the physiology field, I understand this may impact on the type of person and their health however I'm also curious to know whether organs, brain, blood can handle such intense activity in one day.
I've pushed myself approx. 20 times in a single days training. This was for elite fitness for competition from sprints on the oval to pumping weights at the gym. I fell asleep not long after I reached home.
by exhaustion I mean to the point when you "must" stop to rest.
Thanks in advance.
Hello, I'm currently studying biology and medicine. Although I have no credentials yet, I'll give you my best answer.
It's not what you'd like to hear, but there is no clean-cut, definitive answer to your question. It's hard to preform studies because people's physical ability varies so much between age, height, weight, family history et cetera--every person is too different to make that kind of a sweeping generalization. We do know that too much exercise can cause permanent damage to your muscles, thyroid gland, and heart. People who are not used to training can end up in the hospital by doing something that would seem easy to a highly trained person.
When you say that a person "must" stop to rest, do you mean that they must stop or else they will faint, or trip, or fall over? Because if that is the case, I believe my professors would say that a person who is not trained very highly like yourself should never be pushed to "exhaustion." Studies show that longer, slower exercises are generally better a person's health. From what I've read, generally, if a person is complaining, it is because they really are in pain. Although I suppose this takes a judgment call on your part, knowing the person's character and how far he or she has gone before.
I'm sorry I can't give you a more exact answer. Given a specific case, analyzing gender, height, weight, age, previous activity et cetera, I could probably give you an estimate of how much exercise would be dangerous, but it's tricky to make generalizations based on what's "average"--something seemingly slight could throw off your answer by a lot. Although I encourage you to ask a real doctor in person--you might get a better answer.
Good luck. I hope this helps, even a little.
