I just got a gym membership, yay!...now what!?

Ok obviously exercise my butt off!

BUT! I have a couple of questions...It doesn't take a genius to exercise but I just want to make sure I'm doing it right and getting the most out of my time there...
1) Should I start with cardio or weights lifting?
2) How does cardio "work"...for one, does it really take your body 15 minutes before you start burning fat? and two, do you burn more fat doing burst of higher intensity cardio? What's the ideal length of time for cardio, 30, 45, 60 min?

3) Am I better off doing legs monday, arms tuesday, etc...versus doing a little of everything the same day?

4) Any other tips or advice would be awesome!

Cardio actually breaks down your muscles so they can be rebuilt. That is why you are hungry afterwards. So ask yourself what you want to rebuild your body with. You want to eat the carbs before you do cardio so you will have energy to burn but after you want to pack in some protein within 30 minutes post-cardio. Protein builds muscle, muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have the faster your metabolism is,. Cardio can be done everyday where weights need a rest day inbetween. You cant lift legs everyday, you will tear something. My usual routine is

5-10 minutes cardio warm up and stretch (ALWAYS STRETCH PRE-LIFT)

Weights training (Stretch DURING weights)

"Cooldown" from weights (a little ab workout with lots of stretching, you aren't actually cooling down, you are just resting your various muscle groups)

Cardio 30-45 minutes. Anytime you feel a cramp coming on, stop and stretch it out. Lactic acid buildup causes cramps. Best remedy? Potassium, so eat a banana. Then STRETCH
