Percentage Issue?

In Excel, using the formula, =(A1-A2)/ABS(A2), it tells me that the percentage difference between 829 (A1) and -17 (A2) is 4,976.47%. By way of further example, Excel is telling me that the difference between 2427 and 270 is 789.89%. Is this correct? If someone could spoon feed this one to me, I'd appreciate it.

The KEY is this: %change = change amount divided by where you started. Multiply this by 100 to turn it into a percentage.

1) The difference between 820 and -17 is 846,

2) You'd now have to divide this 846 change by your starting number. The problem is you don't say which was your starting.

(a) If you began with 829, you'd divide the 846 by 829, then multiply by 100 to get 102.05%.

(b) But if you started with the -17, you'd divide the 846 by -17, then multiply by 100 to get 4976.47%.
