Massage Therapy Grows as a tool for Pain Management
According to a survey by the American Massage Therapy Associatoin (AMTA), more people are receiving massage therapy for medical purposes than for relaxation. The survey also revealed that baby boomers have more massages than those who are young people, and more likely to receive massages for medical reasons.
"It is not surprising that people turn to massage therapy to improve their welfare "Said Dr. Leena S. Guptha, president of the AMTA." It is a proven way to manage pain, recover from injury, and improve their quality of life, in many cases limiting the need for medications or invasive treatments. "
Almost one third of Americans have used massage therapy at least one time for relief pain - just behind those who have turned to chiropractic (38%) and physical (44%) therapy. Those who have sought massage therapy for medical reasons report various reasons including pain management, injury recovery, pain, general welfare, and control of headaches or migraines. The benefits of massage therapy are also supported by a growing number of medical reports. A scientific journal published in the magazine's 2007 Julu Evidence Based Complementary Medicine shows that professional massage therapy can be more effective than some other therapies in managing certain types of pain, especially lower back pain, discomfort shoulder, or headaches. The AMTA is quick to point out that it is important for consumers to find a professional massage therapist and the use of therapy increases massage.
Among those who have had a massage in the last five years, baby boomers have an average of just under 20 massages, while an average of about 10 massages for those between 18 and 44. It also appears that the immediate postwar generation tend to look more often massage for your health. Thirty eight percent of people 45-64 said they had received massages for medical reasons, while only 25 percent of people aged 18-44 before massage as the reason for the treatment of pain.
In fact, of all people surveyed, 87 percent of people agree that massage can be effective in reducing pain and 85 percent agree that massage can be beneficial to health and wellness. Only 39 percent of respondents believe that massage is "just to relax. "
This belief is echoed in the offices of doctors. One in five people said they have discussed massage therapy their doctors or healthcare providers. Among those who have had this debate, more than half said their doctors had "highly recommended" or "encouraged" the use of massage for pain management and wellness.
When looking for help with the pain, consumers have the option massage therapy for a pain-free lifestyle. Trigger Point Therapy provides a narrow field within the muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. A point trigger in the back, for example, can trigger neck pain. The neck reacts like a satellite trigger point, causing pain in the head. These trigger points are caused by overuse or injury. Trigger point massage uses pressure and release technique isolated. In this type of massage, the recipient participates through breathing deep, and identify the exact source and intensity of pain. Through the method of trigger points, releasing toxins from the muscles, while also endorphins, helps relieve the affected area.
Deep Tissue Massage is used to target knots and chronic muscle tension. This technique also helps reduce inflammation and reduce scar tissue. The focus is on the deeper layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia. With blows across the grain of muscles and deep finger pressure, the receiver may experience some pain that lasts a couple of days before resulting in relaxation and pain relief.
It is used in the relief of tension headaches, arthritis and back pain, reflexology is a type of massage that focuses exclusively on the hands and feet using targeted points in the limbs to send signals to the brain and nervous system balance. During treatment, endorphins are released, reducing stress and returning the body to balance.
The The most popular massage, Swedish massage was developed in Stockholm back centuries and is the most common type of bodywork done today. Rub the muscles with long slides using mineral oils allows the entire body to relax the blood returns to heart. This ideal form of massage is to increase oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins and improve circulation and flexibility while relieving tension.
"Health care providers and consumers are discovering that massage therapists have always understood that massage is not only relaxing, but also an important tool for the treatment of pain and general welfare, "said Dr. Guptha.
